SELF STUDY REPORT-3RD CYCLE                          SUPPLEMENTARY SSR - 3RD CYCLE

Education

About the Department

The Department of Education of Sathaye College was established in June 1982. It was one of the two colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai, that decided to offer 'Education' as an optional subject at the undergraduate level. From June 1984 to April 2007, it offered 'Education' as a double major subject as it is still being offered for distance learners of the university. Today, Sathaye College is the ONLY college under the University of Mumbai that offers 'Education' as a single major at the final year of the 3 year undergraduate program leading to the B.A. degree. The emphasis on 'Education' has only increased thereafter.

The University of Mumbai and the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Maharashtra, granted permission to Sathaye College to upgrade 'Education' from a double major subject to a single major subject in June 2007 on condition that no additional grant and no additional post would be sanctioned for the same. SAthaye College rose to the challenge. Without increasing the fessa collected from students, it has been admitting students to the TYBA class to study 6 papers of 'Education' with appropriate technological support (use of computers) and has been paying for the additional faculty appointed for the purpose. The Management has been very encouraging by spending its resources for all the additional needs of students. The students are extremely grateful for the benevolence of the Management and their gratitude is being expressed by their university examination results. Our students have been consistently doing well in the university examinations. Our visually challenged student, Mamta Chandiramani, stood first in the TYBA examination conducted by the university in April 2008. In subsequent years too, there have been university toppers adding laurels to the department. There has alos been a substantial and significant improvement in the academic performance of the students at the TYBA university examination as compared to their entry level performance.

About the Subject

'Education' is both a Science as well as an 'Art'. The subject is first introduced to the young learner at the FYBA level, their having no concept of the subject upto the higher secondary school level. So teachers spend substantial time in initiating students into the subject. The appropriate blending of theory with practical applications, makes the subject very interesting for students. Every paper has a 'practical component which makes it different from most other 'Arts' subjects. 'Introduction to Education' taught to students at FYBA level, gives them a bird's view about the subject. Field visits to various institutions mentioned in the curriculum, makes theoretical learning very practical. 'Educational Psychology' and 'Guidance & Counseling' taught at SYBA level involve performing of psychological experiments in the classroom and its recording as well as talks by Counsellors and doing of Job Analysis. Each subject at the TYBAlevel lends itself to some practicuum in each semester. Field visits, making of teaching aids, live demonstration of teaching skills, preparation of tools of evalutaion etc are some of the practical activities which make learning very interesting. TYBA students gets hand-on experience of Peer-teaching, Computer Assisted Instruction, Individualized Programmed Instruction etc. All these activites are followed by discussions to bring about improvement. As the student-teacher ratio is ideal, there is close interaction. Teachers are able to mentor students, enable them to set realistic targets and help them strategize their learning to achieve resounding success in examination. This close bonding between students and teachers exists, not just while they are students of the college but continues even after students leave the college. The fact that the second faculty member, an ex-student of the department, has so smoothly slipped into the role of mentor, is evidence to this fact.

Many students of the department choose to take up 'teaching' as a profession and opt to pusue courses leading to Early Childhooc Care and Education (ECCE), Diploma in Education (DEd), Bachelor of Education (BEd), Master of Education (MEd), MA in Education, Masters in Educational Technology, PG Diploma in Vocational Guidance & Counseling and even PhD in Education.
